Time Without A Cell Phone
I woke up Monday morning to find out that my cell phone was not working. I panicked, how could I go without my morning routine of text messages or checking my blackberry for facebook updates? I figured I would go to the ATT store on my lunch and purchase a new battery, thinking that was the problem. I get to the store and try a new battery, didn't work. The clerk told me that since my phone was purchased within the past year I could have a new one sent to me. I got the number and called as soon as I was back in my office. The standard delivery was 3-5 business days, but ohhh no, I needed my phone a.s.a.p. Instead of the free delivery, I payed $15 dollars to have my phone sent to me by 3p.m. the next day. That time without my phone was horrible and all I could do was think about having a working phone. My point is, I cannot live without my blackberry, I need to feel connected, what I once thought was an "electronic leash" is now my existence. This is sad, but this is how I think many people feel. I am addicted to technology.

I think that is has become somewhat rediculous the way people have started to use their cell phones and Blackberry's. By checking email and Facebook constantly. It has taken away from personal conversation and attention because people are constantly looking for their phone, looking at their phone or flinching to every little noise they hear that mimics their phone's noise It creates a situation, such as you experianced, tha I do not look forward to experiancing myself. When Blackberry's first came out I thought that they were cool and I wanted one, but the amount of money a month people spend on these phones is not worth it in the end.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right. And the face that I have to take "bathroom breaks" at work becaues I have to text someone back or read a message I that I received on blacberry means that I do hve a problem, and if other people are like me then they have an attentional bias to hear every little noise as a message on their phone, I would probably be more productive in general if I didn't have a problem with using my phone so much.
